Stop opening with your life story
Many relocating candidates open with paragraphs about loving Germany or seeking new challenges. Hiring managers already assume you want the job. Lead with why your recent work maps to two or three requirements in the ad.
Structure that travels well
- Reference the role and where you saw it
- Match two concrete requirements with evidence
- Address one likely concern (notice period, language level, relocation timing)
- Close with availability for a conversation
Keep to one page unless the employer explicitly invites more.
Language level honesty
If your German is B1, do not write a C2 letter you could not defend in interview. Either work with a consultant on accurate, speakable phrasing, or submit in English when the vacancy is posted that way — consistency matters more than borrowed elegance.
When adaptation helps
Cover letter adaptation for German employers is less about prettier adjectives and more about selecting which experiences belong in the letter versus the Lebenslauf. The letter persuades; the CV proves.
